SAMAB's 12th Annual Conference, November 6-8, 2001, Holiday Inn SunSpree Resort, Gatlinburg, Tennessee

"From Issues to Action: Opportunities for Stewardship in the Southern Appalachians"

Participate in the 12th Annual SAMAB Fall Conference, focusing on opportunities for stewardship of our region's natural resources and communities! The conference provides the opportunity to explore how issues can be resolved by actions that link resource managers, citizens, scientists, community groups, political leaders, and policy makers with one another. Especially welcome are stories of citizens working with scientists, scientists working with resource managers, and managers and citizens educating each other as stewards of the Southern Appalachians. Findings of the Southern Forest Resource Assessment will be reviewed, and the Southern Appalachian Regional Information System (SARIS) will be demonstrated.

A brief paragraph describing your poster, short talk, panel discussion, workshop, film/video, poster, or other presentation is required. We encourage you to address one of the conference subthemes:

• Watershed restoration and management: Opportunities for Federal and State agencies and NGOs to work with local watershed organizations;
• Actions to sustain the environment, society, and economy of communities near the Great Smoky Mountains National Park;
• Exotic pest plants: Working to coordinate efforts to assess, manage, and educate;
• Cultural resources in the Southern Appalachians: Current research and Cherokee perspectives;
• Research-based resource management: Partnerships of scientists and managers;
• Creating, maintaining, and enhancing livable communities as gateways to our public lands, with special focus on the Appalachian Trail;
• Citizen-science: Exploring the potential of citizen-based environmental monitoring activities;
• Communication techniques to improve the dialogue about environmental management and community sustainability;
• Environmental "streamlining": Coordinating activities to improve environmental impact assessment in the Southern Appalachians

Include with your paragraph the subtheme and the type of presentation you propose. Also submit your name, title, address, organization name (if appropriate), phone number, fax number, e-mail address, and audio-visual requirements by August 31. Notification of acceptance will occur by mid-September. An agenda and registration information for the conference will be available on the SAMAB web site and in the fall SAMAB newsletter.
