Without glaciers to melt and seas to rise, the effects of climate change may be less dramatic in the southern Appalachians than elsewhere, but predicted changes in temperature and water availability that do occur will have profound effects on our ecosystems, resources, and communities. What choices should we make now—in our resource management, community planning, and research agendas—to be better prepared and more resilient in light of climate change? This year’s SAMAB Conference will focus on what we know and how we can respond to climate change and variability in the southern Appalachians.
The keynote speaker will be Sam Pearsall (who recently joined the Environmental Defense Fund as the Southeast Regional Director for Land, Water and Wildlife; he was previously Director of Science for The Nature Conservancy’s North Carolina chapter). The title of Sam's talk will be:“Climate Disruption and the Southern Appalachians: Is Adaptation Possible?”
The aims of this SAMAB conference are to offer concise, accurate information about climate change in the southern Appalachians; and advance the planning in the region that will improve our resilience, and explore how we can direct resource management and community development to respond to the effects of climate changes.
The 2009 SAMAB Fall Conference is being held at Crowne Plaza Resort Hotel, Asheville,Tennessee.
