Monday, November 1, 1999 from 9:30AM to 12:30PM--Invasive Pest Plants of the Southern Appalachians

Lee Patrick, Invasive Plant Control, Inc., will lead a training workshop for resource managers and community members interested in invasive plant control. The workshop will provide an overview of invasive pest plants in the Southern Appalachians, including their identification, biology, and recommended control strategies. Participants will learn methods for assessing and planning invasive pest plant control programs and will view invasive plant controls projects ongoing in the Great Smoky Mountains National Parks. Cost: $20. (Min registration 10, maximum 20)

Wednesday, November 3, 1999 from 3:15 to 5:30P--Community-based Assessment of Scenic Quality |

Laura Rotegard, Community Planner at the Blue Ridge Parkway, will lead this workshop designed for community members and resource managers, alike. Participants will be introduced to a method of systematically inventorying and assessing scenic views. Community participation is integral in the assessment technique and fosters understanding of the views as well as firm connections to community decision makers. The method encourages partnerships within communities and between communities and neighboring land and resource managers. The workshop includes a field trip to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park to analyze viewsheds. Cost: FREE (Min registration 5, maximum 15) |
