Shelby NC has also managed to save a large vacant department store in the heart of its downtown. It was the home of Belk-Stevens, a southeast regional chain, for almost 60 years before the store was moved to the newly opened Cleveland Mall in 1982. A false aluminum façade was added to the building in the 1960s.
