SAMAB Opportunities
Position Available:
For January or May 2003: The National Biological Information Infrastructure (NBII) Southern Appalachian Information Node (SAIN) (http://sain.nbii.gov) has a position available, as follows:
GIS/CONSERVATION BIOLOGY/ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT--
Masters-level person to synthesize, integrate, and disseminate inventory and monitoring data being collected by federal, state, and non-profit/private organizations in the Southern Appalachians and beyond. The successful candidate will:
- identify relevant data from various agency data bases and from other organizations that generate or archive such data;
- coordinate protocols through which partner data can be indexed, searched, and made accessible through SAIN inventory and search mechanisms;
- develop web map services and other information synthesis products that demonstrate patterns, trends, or other relationships not seen in individual data sources alone;
- evaluate, communicate and participate in opportunities for cross-boundary collaborations in resource-management or research needs (such as invasive species assessment and control, sensitive species habitat requirements assessment, modeling, restoration, and others);
- moderate an electronic user forum for SAIN data users, collect usage statistics and feedback from users about the value of SAIN services and priorities for SAIN enhancements, report monitoring plans, progress, and feedback on value to the news section of the SAIN web site and other outlets.
Candidate must have demonstrated skills in GIS, information analysis and synthesis, and communication. This is a full-time position through the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.
